 |
Nikki informs us that she is an ambitious, full-time working mother, in a senior position, in her 40's and that she has reached a crossroads in her life. This is a state of affairs that many of us who have reached 40 and beyond will recognise, but I suspect that most of us carry on regardless in the hope that we can head off our mid-life crisis.
For Nikki the question is whether to pursue her career and confesses that she is not sure whether she has the desire to push through barriers to promotion to board level. Rather than bury her head in the sand ............read more |

I am in my forties. I was brought up in a wealthy, middle class family. My father was a very successful entrepreneur, a millionaire by the age of forty. | MY JOB: STELLA KEMP in a maximum security prison |
 |
Stella Kemp describes in her own words what it is like to teach in a maximum security prison.........
My yoga teacher brought me to the prison in 2000. She was asked to teach some of the inmates in 1998. One of the most notorious paramilitary operators of the troubles, ‘The Border Fox’ was to become her student at that time. The thick grey stone walls seemed to cast their shadow inside—it felt so cold when we went in, and to this day the tenperature is always remarkably cooler inside. That first day.............. read more |

| DIARY: How...and why... to run the London Marathon |
 |
What is it really like to train for and complete the London Marathon?
My name is Nikki and I am 44 years old. I started running at the age of 40 because I didn't want to be 'fat and 40' and didn't want to spend loads of money on a gym membership; plus I hate the gym anyway. I'm always the fattest person there! So running was, cheap, easy and could fit in around my job/kid/home.
I started running with a friend who was an experienced runner. We entered a few running meets and........... read more |

Phil Birch has developed a unique methodology that allows you to manage your resources and tasks in a co-ordinated business model.
We start at the very beginning with the MISSION STATEMENT
In the many, many meetings that I have had with business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, company boards, department heads and, just as importantly, those key individuals working in the operational activities of a business the issue that generated the widest spectrum of responses from participants was that of Mission Statements.

| ENTREPRENEURSHIP...advice from our business correspondent |
 |
It's nine o'clock in the morning. It's raining. I've been pacing and deliberating over which business topic to present in our first issue. I want it to be motivational and inspiring, and to represent the principles of our journal, namely independent and informative, with hopefully, a small amount of intuition thrown in for good measure.
So where do I go for this inspiration?
I decide to focus on a subject close to my own heart; entrepreneurship. I start to rattle away on my laptop to find a definition of entrepreneur; I like this one the best......read more |

| SOLUTION FOCUSSED LEADERSHIP |
 |
|
This article is a personal statement based around research work conducted into Solution Focussed Leadership. This method is based upon Solution Focussed Therapy (SFT), created in the 1980s at the Brief Family Therapy Centre in Milwaukee by Steve de Shazer and his team. The unique feature of SFT is that it focuses on solutions and not on problems. As such it matches my own outlook in looking for answers not dwelling on problems.
The idea has been transformed into Solution Focussed Education by a remarkable lady called Kerstin Mahlberg who, together with Maud Sjoblom, has implemented the methods at the FKC Mellansjo School outside Stockholm....read more |

| A DAY OUT IN THE FARNE ISLANDS |
 |
The Farne Islands are major sactuaries for breeding sea-birds. We join a day-trip to Inner Farne to spend the day with the puffins and terns!
As a teenager I was sure that I was going to be the female David Attenborough or at the very least become Jaques Cousteau's beautiful assistant. Despite a degree in zoology, life took me down a very different path. Which means that I have a deep, unfulfilled love of nature and, just in case anyone at the BBC reads this, I am still home alone, waiting to be discovered.
The islands are billed as "the most famous sea-bird sanctuary in the British Isles" ....read more |

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
An overly acid condition is associated with headaches, arthritis, indigestion and even an increased risk of cancer. | VOLUNTEERING - A personal account of befriending |
 |
|
I had been considering volunteering for a few months. I work from home and wanted to do something useful within the community and something that would involve me working with people. I had no real idea of where to start and if the skills I have would be of any use to anyone, so I popped into the local volunteering centre to get some ideas. The first number they gave me was for Corbenic. I have travelled along the road to Dunkeld hundreds of times but didn't know that the community existed so I was intrigued and made an appointment with the befriending co-ordinator. I was immediately impressed. The grounds are stunning and the estate is set in the beautiful Perthshire hills but ............ read more |

| MAGGIES MONSTER BIKE and HIKE |
 |
|
Maggie's Monster Bike & Hike is now in its 6th year and is a 24-hour fundraising team challenge. The event goes from Fort William through to Inverness covering 73 miles along the Great Glen Way.
Teams of between two and six people start out early in the morning at Fort William, Scotland. The first stage is by bike and covers the first 30 miles of the Great Glen Way to Fort Augustus. Now, when I think bike I think gentle pedal around the leafy lanes of the Cheshire plain, maybe stopping for a pie and a pint along the way. This is not that kind of cycling! I have to confess that I haven't taken part in this event, neither have I walked this section of............ read more |
