| MY JOB: SHARON BUCKLEY of PLAITTS |
| In the MY JOB section of the3rdi.co.uk we aim to cover the full spectrum of experience of real businesswomen doing real jobs. What could be more typical of women into business than the independent hairdresser? We probably all have a hairdresser; we all visit a salon so we think we know what's involved. But unless you work in the industry you can't really understand the scope of the salon AS A BUSINESS. For this issue, then, I visited a small independent hairstyling salon in a market town in Cheshire, to find out how the business is run from the owners perspective. ............read more |

| YOGA BUGS AND SUCCESS BEYOND THE DRAGONS DEN |
The YogaBugs concept was born at the Art of Health Yoga Studio & Complementary Health Centre in Balham in 1996. It is the brainchild of Fenella Lindsell (Nell).
Nell had worked in the travel and incentive business for 10 years, during that time she became a keen yogi and trained as a teacher. When the opportunity to buy a Yoga Studio in SW London arose, she and her husband Rob jumped at the opportunity to turn their passion for yoga into a business.
Despite, or maybe as a result of, turning down £250,000 ........ read more |

| BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE: RISK |
| Inspiration for this article comes predominantly from something I read in the finance papers earlier this month. It was an article on greed: specifically the greed of the modern banker and focused on two aspects of this high profile phenomenon. The writer provided the short account of the process he encountered in attempting to raise funding in the early 1990s for a new business venture. I too did this. My own experience was more productive than his, it seems, but the principles were highly consistent. Essentially, his conversation with his local bank manager concluded as follows;
"Of course you'll offer your properties as collateral?" ........... read more |

| QUALIFICATIONS ARE NOT ENOUGH |

Personally, I am an advocate for university education but have always maintained it is a life experience, rather than a job guarantee.
It's a chance to grasp your independence, expand your peer group and discover your potential. After three to four years the outcome is not about what you get, it's more about who you've become in the process. That said, I think our education system is failing to address the core life skills our young people need to make it in what is becoming a more dynamic, global and fast moving economy. Alongside educational/technical skills they need .....read more |

| BUSINESS FINANCE...UNDERSTANDING VAT |
VAT registered businesses act as unpaid tax collectors and are required to account both promptly and accurately for all the tax revenue collected by them. The VAT system is policed by HMRC with heavy penalties for breaches of the legislation. Ignorance is not an acceptable excuse for not complying with the rules.
We highlight some of the areas that you need to consider. ....read more |

| ENTERPRISE and ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN SCHOOLS |
Have things have changed since I was at school?
Back in the 1980's the choice of 'O' levels and 'A' levels was limited to academic subjects such as Mathematics, English Literature and Latin. Those who were likely to go on to University were nurtured and those likely to leave education at 18 or, heaven forbid 16, were quietly ignored. If you passed your 'O' levels you were expected to focus on your best three subjects at 'A' level, regardless of their future value to employers. Only if you struggled with 'O' levels but were determined to remain in school would a course in Business Studies be thought to be appropriate.....read more |

| CALCULATING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT |

But where to start?
I think I'm pretty environmentally friendly, I teach yoga and meditation, I jog, I ride my bike (unless it's raining). I only watch the TV when Liverpool are playing (or that programme when wannabees fall into mud or bounce off big red balls) and I don't use the dryer bit of my washine machine, even though it means that the house is constantly draped with wet clothes. . ............ read more |

| WELL-BEING and THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE FISH FINGER CAKE |
I had a wake up call last weekend, a sudden spontaneous and totally unexpected moment of illumination.
The catalyst for this sudden blast of insight was a birthday cake. Not just any birthday cake but a cake in the shape of a fishfinger draped with a very pretty pink thong and accompanied by a beautiful pair of odd dressy sandals. When I say odd, I mean odd as in not matching. This may appear odd to you (this time odd as in 'strange') but to those involved it all makes perfect sense and is indeed 'A Long Story'. read more |

| VOLUNTEERING - WITH THE RSPB |
The RSPB is celebrating 30 years of its residential volunteering scheme this year. And the wildlife charity says that volunteers staying on site has saved them millions of pounds and allowed them to carry out work they could never dream of paying for.
Since official records began in 1996, there have been over 8,199 volunteers on the scheme, and they have achieved 33,808 weeks of work. This is valued at almost £7.5 million. It is the equivalent of having an extra 55 full time members of staff each year on RSPB nature reserves. ............ read more |

| FUNDRAISING - THE CALEDONIAN CHALLENGE |
The Caledonian Challenge is billed as the UK's most spectacular physical and mental challenge. It would be hard to disagree!
The distance covered is more than two marathons, some 54 miles, to be completed in 24 hours? And the journey is through some of Scotland's most remote, rugged and stunningly beautiful countryside; taking in Ben Nevis - the UK's highest mountain, the splendour of Glen Coe, the wilds of Rannoch Moor and the scenic Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park.
For the past 3 years I have worked as a massage therapist at Tyndrum, offering massage...and words of encouragemnt...to those taking part. ........... read more |
