THE BOOK CHAIN ~  How to Succeed as an NLP Therapist & Coach
AMAZON REVIEW First things first, this is a genuinely useful book for any NLP graduate who wants to set themselves up as an NLP coach/practitioner. It is not another book that introduces NLP or covers the NLP techniques; it is instead a book that covers the practicalities of creating your own NLP coaching business, The handbook is an easy read, written in a very 'chatty' style. Indeed, the author is utilising conversational NLP with you as the reader, often speaking to you directly as if she was in the room with you. It appears that the author is a natural at eliciting positive states in others with an engaging sense of humour. You will most probably find yourself enjoying the fun play with Eriksonian language patterns as you read! The author seems to walk her talk and an aspect I particularly like is her offering options instead of telling you what to do. This captures the spirit of NLP in that 'one option is no option, two options is a dilemma and three or more options create choice'. There are also plenty of pertinent questions that you will want to ask yourself (and answer) if you are going to become a self employed NLP practitioner. Having run many NLP practitioner courses myself, I would certainly recommend this book to those who are seeking to take their career in an NLP direction. Review by Joe Cheal: NLP Trainer & Rapport Magazine Book Review Panelist. --Rapport, The Magazine for Personal Development, Winter 2009/10

This book is one of the few that I have reviewed that ‘does exactly what it says on the tin‘ as it were. It is a well constructed, well laid out book that walks the reader through many of the tasks and activities required in establishing and developing a business as an NLP coach. In fact, many of the business related topics are eminently valid and useful for any type of independent coaching role.

Murielle Maupoint, whose story you can read in the magazine this month, details her past career as a psychologist as follows: "I have worked for over a decade at the sharp end of dysfunctional human behaviour and social exclusion. With NLP I found a very easy to understand and accessible model that explains how we each create reality, and how to quickly effect changes in our lives. I want you to quickly achieve success, so that you can start making a difference now.... and because you're dealing with people's lives you have an even bigger moral obligation to learn what to do now to achieve professional results. This is a practical book; you will want to pick up time and time again. It has been written out of a passionate desire to support motivate and inspire. It is the opportunity to benefit from proven methods of working and alternative perspectives to consider as you build your own practice"

Testimonials to the book read:
"This is an absolutely must have book for any level of NLP Practitioner"
"The handbook resonated with me both on a personal and business level"
"If you are looking for a step by step guide to setting up your own successful practice then this is the book for you"
"A superb guide to add to your NLP toolbox"

It is indeed a very practical book. Interspersed with relevant and poignant quotations from business experts and writers alike it is a book that you will want to pick up time and time again.

The first part of the book details how to set yourself up as a practitioner. I found reading the book easy. It is broken into digestible sections and a structure that covers most areas of required attention; in fact, the first section is a useful tool for anyone considering almost any independent coaching role. Firstly, find a niche. A well-used but never-the-less invaluable piece of advice.

The chapters continue with eminently useful advice on how to tap into your passion, how to choose clients, creating a brand and dealing with competition.

It further develops the business theme with sections on business basics and achieving success as a coach. This is all valuable material, useful to any aspiring therapist not just one setting up a practice in NLP.

The handbook develops the business theme further in the second section which focuses on how to run a successful practice covering such topics as where to base your practice, how long the sessions should be, how much to charge and the like. Once again I found this all very useful and not NLP specific.

I particularly like the inclusion of the following example because it addresses a common problem for all self employed coaches and workers irrespective of the particular job;
A woman was strolling along a street in Paris. When she spotted Picasso sketching out a sidewalk cafe. The woman asked Picasso, if he might sketch and charge accordingly.
Picasso obliged in just minutes there was an original Picasso.
"And what do I owe you," she asked.
"5000 francs," he answered.
"But it only took me three minutes," she reminded him.
"No", said Picasso, "It took me all my life."

This is an excellent illustration of a common problem and I love its inclusion.

As I progress I learn how to effectively take notes, how to manage ‘energy vampire‘ clients and how to be objective The chapters flow easily and sensibly starting with how to set up as a practitioner, through how to run and develop a successful practice and ends with specific reference and advice for dealing with specific client issues.

As an independent coach myself I found this book useful and informative for many aspects of my own practice and whilst I cannot directly comment on the intricacies of the NLP specific information I would definitely recommend this read to anyone that wishes to succeed as a therapist or coach.

THE MASTER KEY SYSTEM by CHARLES F. HAANDEL
Bill Gates is alleged to be a convert. I am and found this method accesible and logical. It is not your run of the mill business-in-a-box book; it requires some deeper thought but because of that is profound and inspiring. Haanel argues that everyone's subconscious is a part of the Universal Consciousness. This gives the individual access to great creative power, in any aspect of life.

The trick, therefore, is to learn how to discipline your inner world, to channel your thinking - so that inner creation is positive and your outside world develops to reflect this.
