There are many, many guides on using Facebook. These are our top 10 tips for getting the most for you and your business.
  1. DECIDE WHO YOU WANT TO NETWORK WITH.
Do you want to use Facebook to keep in touch with your family and friends or do you want to network with professionals? Knowing who you want to connect with is key to developing the kind of profile you want.

  2. CHOOSE YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS
Facebook allows you to control who sees your personal information, so once you have decided who you want to talk to you can adjust your privacy settings to allow just those you want to see your profile to have access to it.

  3. BUILD YOUR BRAND
Once you have decided upon your audience you can make sure that your profile supports your personal or business image. This is easier to do if you are just joining facebook as you have a clean slate to work with but if you already have a facebook profile, take a good look at it and make sure it properly reflects your brand.

  4. BE AUTHENTIC
This is as important on facebook as it is in "real life" If you try to be something that you are not you will be found out. This is true whether you are building a personal or business profile on facebook.

  5. MAKE SURE THAT YOU COMPLETE YOUR PROFILE
Make sure that you include as much information as you possibly can that may be of interest to your audience. Don't forget to list your blog, websites and links to your profiles on other social networks. In this way you make it easier for your facebook contacts to connect with you in other places.

  6. BUILD YOUR NETWORK
The easiest way to build your network quickly is to import contacts from your e-mail account. But don't just do this once, make it part of your facebook strategy. You can also use Facebook Connect to encourage visitors to your websites or blog to connect with you on Facebook, like this:

  7. UPDATE YOUR PROFILE
Make sure that you actually use facebook. Your status lets you tell your audience who you are and what you do. So keep the information up to date, relevant and interesting! There are applications within facebook that will allow your status to be updated automatically using information you post to other sites, such as twitter, which make keeping your profile up to date a little easier. You can find these from your facebook homepage.

  8. USE GROUPS and PAGES
If you have a large network it is worth starting a group or a facebook page. You may want to start a facebook group to bring together friends, people with similar interests to you or to connect with others in your industry. A facebook page allows you to build a brand. If you don't want to start a group or page then make sure that you join existing groups and become a valuable contributor to that community. It is a great way to build your network.

  9. SHOUT OUT and LINK BACK
If you have other social media accounts, such as twitter, then placing a link on these other sites to promote your Facebook profile is a good idea. Similarly you can feed your facebook content out to other social media sites. Ping.fm is a good place to start to link up all of your social media activity.

  10. ORGANISE AN EVENT
You can get involved by joining or starting an event on facebook. By opening up your event to everyone, you can meet new people and discover other people who have shared interests and by starting an event, you’re positioning yourself as a leader and an expert, which is great for your personal or business brand.
